MAKATI, Philippines – In an effort to boost the career readiness of its Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) students, the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) recently hosted a resume writing workshop on 3 April 2024. The workshop was organized by the Career Services Office (CSO).
Leading the session was Patricia Manasan, an alumna from the MSDS class of 2019, currently serving as the Data Science Head and Senior Assistant Vice President at Security Bank Corporation. Drawing from her extensive experience, Ms. Manasan provided invaluable insights into crafting resumes tailored for success in the competitive field of data science.
Sharing anecdotes from her own rigorous journey as an AIM MSDS student, Ms. Manasan emphasized the challenges and triumphs that paved the way for her successful career. From spearheading the establishment of a data science team to developing models for product cross-selling strategies, her narrative served as both inspiration and guidance for the aspiring data scientists in attendance.
As a hiring manager, Ms. Manasan offered practical advice on creating compelling resumes that stand out to employers. Stressing the importance of concise communication, she encouraged students to highlight their key accomplishments and relevant experiences while keeping the content clear and focused.
Ms. Manasan advised students to prioritize their academic achievements, focusing on their bachelor's and postgraduate degrees. While commendations are nice to have, she noted that they are not of utmost importance.
In addition to traditional resume components, Ms. Manasan urged students to consider including a portfolio showcasing their top projects and contributions. By providing tangible examples of their work, students can offer prospective employers a more comprehensive understanding of their capabilities and expertise.
She also reminded students to include up-to-date contact information, ensuring that potential employers can easily reach out for further inquiries or opportunities. She admitted that being a graduate of AIM can be advantageous if she is the hiring manager as she can attest to the quality of training the student has undergone.
Concluding the session, Ms. Manasan and the CSO team allotted time for a live resume critique, allowing students to present their current resumes and receive advice on how to improve them.
The resume writing workshop provides MSDS students with a valuable opportunity to learn how to navigate the competitive landscape of data science careers using the AIM advantage with confidence.
