Science Research Specialist II (Access Lab)

RATIONALE

ACCeSs@AIM is the first of its kind in the Philippines and among the very first in a business school. It was established on the 8th of March 2018, and it is the first industry-facing data science and advanced analytics laboratory of AIM. It is composed of a multidisciplinary team of experienced and highly trained scientists and researchers who are working together to create effective and practical solutions for its stakeholders. At present, ACCeSs@AIM has successfully completed project collaborations with two front-liners in the banking and conglomerate sectors to improve their business processes through the development of data-driven decision support tools customized to their needs. In 2020, the lab acquired government funding for two projects under the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST – PCIEERD). One is in partnership with Manila Water Corporation, Inc. and the other is in collaboration with the Local Government Unit of Cauayan City, Isabela and the Isabela State University – Cauayan Campus.
With these lined-up activities, the lab is looking for a Science Research Specialist II wherein s/he is expected to work with cross-functional team members in delivering high quality outputs for its engagements. S/he will help in the facilitation and implementation of various initiatives of ACCeSs lab that aims to lead and promote the use of data science, artificial intelligence, and computational models to help industries, government agencies, and other sectors to innovate.

Personnel Requirements

  • S/he has an undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Physics, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field and preferably at least two (2) years of work experience.
  • S/he has knowledge of SQL and solid experience working with relational databases including PostgreSQL, as well as familiarity with other databases.
  • S/he has strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured and semi-structured datasets.
  • S/he has a working knowledge of Python programming and Linux operating system.
  • Strong preference is given to candidates with working experience in using geospatial tools and libraries (e.g. QGIS, PostGIS, PySAL).

Project Duration

  • One year
  • Assist in research and development efforts of ACCeSs@AIM’s team implementing the DOST-PCIEERD grant project titled “PATURO: Platform for Tracking and Assessment of Urbanization – Related Opportunities”. Specific activities include, but are not limited to:
    • Assist in designing and implementing the data architecture of a data hub for the Local Government Unit (LGU) of the City of Cauayan, Isabela. This includes writing ETL scripts, creating software for inter-operating with existing systems as required for the purposes of data exchange, building analytics tools to meet the needs of downstream users such as data scientists and other end-users.
    • Working with data scientists, other data engineers and visualization engineers to deliver data amenable for subsequent analytics and visualization.
    • Working with project stakeholders to assist with data-related technical issues and support their project-related data infrastructure needs.
    • Training LGU staff in running and maintaining the hub in the future.
  • Collaborate with scientists and other team members of ACCeSs@AIM to achieve the laboratory’s project and research goals.
  • Develop, manage and support program partnerships and relationships within and outside the Institute.
  • Continue to upskill and reskill as a research engineer at ACCeSs@AIM.
  • Teach/assist/mentor students in AIM, when requested.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
