Promoting Sustainable Finance in the Asian Region
The Asian Institute of Management Gov. Jose B. Fernandez, Jr. Center for Sustainable Finance (AIM-JBF Center) is a leading research institution that primarily focuses on research and initiatives related to sustainable finance, aiming to promote environmentally and socially responsible practices in the financial sector.
The AIM-JBF Center conducts groundbreaking research on various aspects of sustainable finance, including environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria integration, impact investing, and climate finance. By bridging the gap between finance and sustainability, the JBF Center plays a vital role in advancing a more resilient and sustainable global financial system.
The objectives of the AIM-JBF Center are:
- To conduct research on policy issues that affect the banking industry and other allied services in the financial and capital markets in the Asian region
- To train and develop competent managers for the banking and financial services industries in the region
- To promote the forging of beneficial business alliances in the region
- To provide a forum for the discussion of important issues affecting the banking and finance sectors

Our Center’s Benefactor
Jose “Jobo” B. Fernandez, Jr. is the esteemed benefactor of the Center for Sustainable Finance, bearing his name in recognition of his pioneering contributions to sustainable development and environmental conservation in the Philippines. As a visionary leader, he championed initiatives to integrate sustainability into finance and governance practices. One of his greatest enduring legacies is his undeniable contribution to the birth of a more competent generation of Philippine banking and financial service managers.
He was the country’s youngest bank president, organizing a truly professional bank at the age of 36, naming it the Far East Bank and Trust Company (FEBTC). Jobo also served as the Philippine Central Bank of Governor for six years (1984-1990). He was the President of the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) for three years and was regularly invited to attend at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development of the World Bank.
About the Gov. Jose B. Fernandez, Jr. Center for Sustainable Finance Director
Professor Felipe O. Calderon is a Canadian CPA, CMA, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines, and an MSc in International Banking and Financial Studies from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He obtained his PhD in Management from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, specializing in International Business. His PhD thesis focused on sustainable lending.
Before returning to the Philippines in 2017, Felipe has 34 years of banking experience. He worked for the Business Development Bank of Canada in Vancouver for 22.5 years, where he held field and leadership positions. His extensive banking experience includes syndicated lending and trade financing in the Philippines and Hong Kong.
At AIM, Felipe is the Head of Washington SyCip Graduate School of Business and Executive Director of the Gov. Jose B. Fernandez Jr. Center for Sustainable Finance. He is one of the Washington-based Global Business School Network’s lead chairs for Sustainable Finance and ESG Investing Impact Community and also a member of the Fair Finance Asia Advisory Committee.
