From Learning to Legacy: James Ho’s Full-Circle Moment at the Asian Institute of Management

James Ho’s journey with the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) began in the Master in Business Management program, Class of 1975, with a singular distinction—he was the only student ever enrolled under an investment arrangement. When he decided to take his postgraduate studies, the application period had closed, and no scholarships were available. He turned to the late tycoon and philanthropist Washington SyCip, one of the Institute’s founders, who saw potential in James and orchestrated to accept him under an investment arrangement. He never mentioned this to anyone.  “I do not go around asking people if they are scholars or on a loan,” he said with a chuckle. His focus was on excelling in the rigorous program.

Reflecting on his time as a student, James recalled the intense competition in the classroom. “Everybody wanted to speak out—even those who could not speak English well,” he shared. The case method of learning pushed students to articulate their thoughts, and some classmates dominated discussions. James, on the other hand, preferred a quieter approach. “Why do you have to talk if you can listen and learn?” he mused.

James forged lifelong friendships during his studies, though he kept his circle small. “Quality over quantity,” he said. His closest friends remain in touch to this day.

A Career Built on Excellence

Even before graduation, James was already on the path to success. A classmate recommended him to an investment house, and just like that, James was hired—without even an interview. It was a pattern that repeated throughout his career. “I do not know what to say about job interviews,” he laughed. “I never really had one.”

James’ pivotal time at AIM led him to join Bancom Development Corporation, a prominent investment house founded by former AIM President Sixto K. Roxas, which played a key role in the Philippines’ financial sector. This opportunity opened doors to eminent positions in the international banking sector, including Merrill Lynch, a global investment management and wealth advisory firm now part of Bank of America. Today, James is a Senior Partner at Bank Julius Baer HK, a premier global private bank specializing in wealth management, continuing to leave his mark on the international financial landscape.

His reputation as a sharp, capable banker preceded him, leading to job offers that required little more than a handshake. But he remained humble about his success. “Banking is easy,” he said. “There is always a solution to every problem.”

A Return on Investment

James’ return to his alma mater was not just a nostalgic visit—it was a conscious decision to give back. A former classmate had set up a fundraising campaign for their 50th-year anniversary. Initially, James considered donating enough to help reach the goal, but after touring the campus, he realized he wanted to do more.

His PHP 25 million donation will fund the renovation of the AIM Conference Center lobby and the four main function rooms that welcome students, alumni, and industry leaders. For James, this is not just a renovation but a meaningful return on the investment the Institute made in him fifty years ago.

James firmly believes in the mission to lead, inspire, and transform. He credits AIM President and Dean, Dr. Jikyeong Kang, for her persuasive leadership and unique charisma in rallying support for the future of the Institute.

Looking back, James has no regrets. If anything, he wishes he could give more. “My donation is my way of showing gratitude,” he said. “My AIM education and Bancom were the two greatest things that happened to me. They opened doors, and for that, I will always be grateful.”

James Ho’s story embodies quiet confidence, relentless drive, and profound gratitude. His generosity ensures that future students have the same opportunities he once embraced, preparing them to lead, inspire, and transform businesses and societies.
